Industry Comparison 2025: Life Sciences and It Show Significant Growth
Although the industry sector remains the leader, accounting for around 10% of all innovations, the life sciences sector has seen the strongest growth since the survey began in 2018, with a 80% increase. The increased number of innovations submitted by chemical and healthcare companies is a clear indication of rising investment in research, sustainability, and biotechnology.
The IT sector continues to be a reliable driver of innovation, demonstrating stable growth. In contrast, the building and household appliances sectors are experiencing declines and losing significant market share this year.
Top 5 industries by share of innovations (German Innovation Awards 2025):
- Industry / Machines & Engineering – 10 %
- Information Technologies – 6,5 %
- Building & Elements – 5,8 %
- Transport & Mobility – 5,2 %
- Design / Digital Agencies – 5 %
Together, chemistry and health account for 8.6% – almost twice the figure from the previous year. This marks a turnaround, with life sciences, medtech and biochemistry moving to the centre of innovation after years of lagging behind.
