Details
The innovative ROTHO ProCarbonCure plant enables CO₂-negative curing of building materials on an industrial scale for the first time. To achieve this, concrete blocks or products made from steel slag are thermally dehumidified in process chambers and exposed to CO₂. The gas-tight chambers are completely flooded with CO₂, which is gradually absorbed by the products. Efficient process technology ensures high energy efficiency, so that CO₂ is stored sustainably in the building material.
The Jury‘s Statement
The construction industry needs ways to reduce emissions without compromising availability and practical usability. The ROTHO ProCarbonCure process addresses precisely this challenge by turning a climate-damaging production step into a contribution to mitigation. Instead of merely avoiding emissions, carbon is captured and integrated into the manufacturing process. This creates a new logic for material use and value creation that directly connects environmental impact with operational feasibility. Its transformative potential is particularly compelling, as it not only improves a single component but redefines a widely used manufacturing principle, thereby enabling scalable change.
