Heraeus AMLOY – Amorphous Alloy Technologies
Description
With its amorphous alloys, Heraeus Amloy offers a completely new class of material with combinations of properties that had previously not been possible to represent. These amorphous alloys, manufactured and processed by Heraeus Amloy, have a high degree of hardness and strength with high elasticity at the same time – a combination which is normally not possible in crystalline materials. Due to its non-crystalline structure, amorphous metals are also called metallic glass. The absence of phase and grain boundaries makes the material corrosion-resistant as well as biocompatible. Heraeus Amloy has developed processing solutions for manufacturing near-net-shape amorphous components at industrial scale, i.e. using injection moulding and 3D printing. With these technologies, Heraeus Amloy is developing a completely new market.
Jury statement
Heraeus Amloy has succeeded in processing its amorphous alloys in injection moulding and 3D printing into almost end-form components on an industrial scale. The amorphous alloys make an impression with special hardness and resilience, and at the same time are ten times more elastic than comparable crystalline materials. The alloys are resistant to corrosion and are also biocompatible. A revolutionary material with a unique combination of properties that opens up exciting opportunities and creates entirely new markets in various industries, like air travel, automotive, medicine, and many more.
